In this section we will update weekly with the fly that has been most prominent in the weeks catch reports

The Zonker/Minkie

(January 26, 2010)

Zonker

During the colder months when lures seem to really come into their own the Zonker and Minkie are patterns that can be deadly at Brookhall when fished right. These are very similar flies and the only real difference which may be obvious to some is the Zonker uses rabbit strip and the Minkie using mink strip. The fur strip is really the key element of this pattern, when it is wet it has so much movement and wiggle in the water which trout find hard to resist. An important point with this fly is to make sure you thoroughly soak the fly before you actually cast it, take it down to the waters edge and squeeze the water thoroughly into the fur and make sure its properly soaked, this will make the fly work properly through the water and also reduce the buoyancy of the fly so it gets down to where the trout are.

Fishing the fly is fairly straight forward depending what depth the trout are lying. If you are using an unweighted fly then anything from an intermediate line to a fast-sink line is ideal, fish it as a single fly on not too long a leader during these colder months with a figure of eight retreive and you wont go far wrong.
