The Pinky
(January 11, 2010)The Pinky

The Pinky was originally created and tied by Dave Mordue from the north east of England. Some people would class this as a bloodworm pattern while others would define it as a lure, whatever you class it as its an extremely effective pattern throughout the year and especially the winter months when the colour pink in flies seems to really come into its own.
The Pinky is tied using pink flexi-floss for the legs and body with a small silver(originally) or gold bead tied into the body Nomad-style. The combination of the pink flexi legs which have a lot of movement in the water, and the weighted bead to get the fly down deep to where the fish are lying during cold spells is what makes this an excellent winter fly.
The best tactics for fishing The Pinky at this time of year would be either :
-
'Straight Lining' This would be fishing a floating line, to this attach a flourocarbon leader of between 15-20ft and tie The Pinky on as either a single fly, or as the point fly with another fly or two on droppers.
-
'Indicator' Fishing The Pinky under the indicator can be deadly at this time of year, again using a long flourocarbon leader and The Pinky on the point you can adjust the indicator until you find the depth the fish are lying at.
The main thing to remember with this fly and any other at this time of year is fish them slow and deep for best results.
