The unsettled weather is having an effect on the fishing lately but its not stopping some anglers from taking good bags of fish. With the weather being so changeable various tactics have been working. On the cooler days anglers have been finding the fish holding deep, sinking lines and a slow retreive have resulted in good catches. Flies working well with this method were black and green lures, zonkers, cormorants, black fritz and cats whiskers although nymphs and buzzers fished deep also accounted for good catches.
On the days when the weather has been more settled and the temperature has risen slightly a lot of fish have been taken just below the surface on floating lines with buzzers, nymps and diawl bachs with the slowest retrieves or static under the bung. Buzzers that worked particularly well this week included the black traffic light buzzer, black holographic and dark olive buzzers.
Anglers that have stayed on in the warmer evenings have been treated to an amazing evening rise during the last hour of daylight, with so many fish on the surface its hard to know which rise to cast to at times. Small cdc patterns, shipmans buzzers and small conventional dries have all been working well.Belfast angler and Brookhall regular Stuart McAllister had a good day on Sunday taking 14 mainly on buzzers on a floating line. Stuart is pictured on the left with a lovely trout of 5lb 3ozs.

Lisburn angler Tommy Wright, pictured right, had a great evening session on buzzers and nymphs. Most of his 18 fish fell to an apple green buzzer.
A special mention for Jordan Stevenson aged 9 from Armagh, he visited Brookhall for his first fly fishing trip on Sunday. The trip was a birthday surprise organised by his Auntie Hilary.
Despite the wet weather Jordan was enthusiastic to learn and within the first half hour he had his first bite. Using an intermediate line and black and green lure Jordan was retrieving the line slowly when
his first ever trout took the fly. The look on
his face said it all. Under instruction only, Jordan lifted the rod high hooking the fish perfectly and pulled the line in and let line out as the fish pulled hard. He played the fish to the net brilliantly and to the delight of himself, his Aunt and all of the surrounding anglers that was it the young lad was hooked on fishing. After a picnic lunch when the sun came out Jordan was eager to get back to the fishing and a change in tactics proved successful yet again with a second fish on a floating line, this time a fin perfect trout around the 2lb mark.

Thanks to all the anglers that encouraged and helped Jordan on the day, this is what its all about getting youngsters interested in fishing and making it a welcoming and enjoyable day for them.
Well done Jordan.
